Is AI Ready To Stop Mass Fish Deaths in East Africa?

Country:

Author:

Fish farmers on Lake Victoria and Kenya’s coast are turning to AI-enabled “early warning” and advisory systems to prevent mass fish deaths and stabilize incomes amid climate-driven water-quality shocks.

This project investigates how these systems are designed, sold, and governed through a case study of ShoShin Innovation Hub’s collaborations with the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute in Kisumu and WorldFish’s Integrated Multi‑Trophic Aquaculture work in Kilifi and Kwale.

Reporting will center on the people most impacted: smallholder farmers and beach management units.

The investigation will also examine AI accountability questions: Who owns and accesses data? Do platforms marketed as “market access” shift bargaining power or create dependency?
