The Northern Triangle countries of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have received at least a billion dollars in U.S. and European aid in the last 20 years to fight the drug trafficking, gang violence and poverty that drive migration to the U.S.
Little of the aid has reached average people or improved the lives of the poor, who now face additional scourges in the coronavirus pandemic and global climate change, with worsening hurricanes, droughts and hunger. Now President Biden proposes sending more money to Central America to address the migration problem.
