Sira Thierij

Sira Thierij is a freelance journalist and filmmaker based in Dakar, Senegal. She reports from across the continent of Africa for international broadcasters, including the BBC, DW, France24, and Voice of America.

Her stories center around human rights, women empowerment, post-conflict societies, migration, and the environment.

Prior to moving to West Africa in spring 2023, she worked as a staff foreign news producer and video journalist for the BBC, covering the EU, the war in Ukraine, and East Africa.

Thierij has produced, filmed, and written a number of Africa short films, including a documentary on Madagascar's drought for BBC World, an observational film on Sierra Leone's drug crisis, the impact of TikTok on Senegalese migrants, and the existential threat to Madagascar's fishing nomads.

Her investigations have been quoted by the U.N. Security Council, brought to the British High Court, and were short-listed for prestigious awards.
