Moraa Obiria

Moraa Obiria is a senior gender writer at Nation Media Group. She aims to tell compelling stories that prompt change in communities. 

Obiria has written in-depth investigative, data-driven stories on gender, development, climate change, the environment, and human rights matters. She has traveled to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia to cover regional stories on gender and human rights. 

Beyond Daily Nation, Business Daily, and The East African, Obiria's work has also appeared in international news outlets, including Thomson Reuters Foundation News [rebranded Context], The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and Xinhua News. 

Obiria has won numerous awards. In 2017, she won the impactAFRICA award for her investigative story on challenges disabled women face while seeking maternal health services. In 2021, she was among 80 people and organizations recognized by the National Gender and Equality Commission for championing gender equality and inclusion in Kenya. 

The next year, she won Journalist of the Year at the Journalists for Human Rights Awards. In 2023, she won second place in the UN Women Eastern and Southern Africa Gender Journalism Awards, in the category of Feminist Movements and Financing for a Gender Equal Future. 

Between 2016 and 2019, Obiria worked at the human rights organization Ogiek Peoples' Development Program, advocating for the rights of minority communities in Kenya and Africa. 

Obiria graduated from Egerton University with honors in communication and media. She's pursuing a master's degree in gender and development from Kenyatta University.
