Antrim County, Michigan, has been a hotbed of election conspiracy theories since the 2020 election, when a human error meant initially reported results showed the wrong candidate leading in the presidential election. In 2024, Trump-aligned Victoria Bishop was elected county clerk on a platform of improving election integrity and cleaning up the county’s voter roll.
Bishop was barely in office for a year before she overstepped her legal authority and began removing eligible voters from the rolls with no apparent rhyme or reason. However, other clerks and the state Bureau of Elections noticed what she was doing. They restored the voters’ registration and revoked Bishop’s access to the state voter file. Bishop is now also the target of a proposed citizen-led recall effort.
What guardrails does Michigan, a critical swing state, have in place to protect its elections from bad actors on the inside?
