María José Longo Bautista

María José Longo Bautista is an investigative journalist at Agencia Ocote with a focus on gender issues. She's based in Quetzaltenango, in western Guatemala.
A graduate in social communication sciences, Longo Bautista began her career in local media. She worked as a correspondent for the newspaper Prensa Libre and for the television channel Guatevisión.
As a freelancer, she published reports for Agencia Ocote, Ojoconmipisto, Plaza Pública, and the human rights magazine Entre Mundos.
She is a professor of journalistic genres at the Mesoamerican University of Quetzaltenango.
In 2017, she participated in the Ojoconmipisto special report 40 Municipalities Under the Microscope, which received an honorable mention in the 2018 Inter-American Press Association's Journalism Excellence Awards.
In 2021, she was part of the Agencia Ocote project It Wasn't Fire, a transmedia in-depth journalism special on the deaths of 41 girls and teenagers at the hands of the state. This project won a 2022 Gabo Award.
