Event
Poetry and Civic Voice: A Workshop and Conversation With Young Poets
Event Date:
July 30, 2026 | 3:00 PM TO 4:00 PM EDT
Join us to explore how the combined power of poetry and journalism can illuminate injustice, challenge dominant narratives, and foster empathy and solidarity.
At the webinar "Poetry and Civic Voice," on July 30, 2026, we will hear from past winners of Fighting Words, a Pulitzer Center poetry contest through which young people respond to and draw lines from news stories.
Poets will offer a brief reading, discuss the issues and stories that move them, and reflect on the connections between their writing and civic action. Webinar attendees will also take part in a writing exercise through which they will have the chance to create and share a poetic response to a story related to current challenges to democracy and human rights.
This event is designed for middle and high school students, along with their educators, but all are welcome to participate.
