An analysis of power in Ecuador's autonomous governments, Mayors Under Scrutiny looks into the assets of the officials in the country. Reporting details their careers, their tax payments, their possible corporate relationships and public contracts, and their judicial past, if any. This project also led to the development of an application that analyzes the profiles of Ecuador's 222 current mayors and 23 province prefectos.
Reporting found that one-third of mayors and governors had significant changes in their asset declarations submitted to the State Comptroller's Office since taking office. Two of these mayors are being investigated by the Department of Justice.
Supported by the Pulitzer Center, this series is in partnership with the nonprofit group Fundamedios. Ecuador Chequea and 36 other media outlets joined the Spondylus Info Lab journalism alliance in the reporting.
