How Health Budget Cuts Are Harming People With HIV Around the World

Through a series of investigative feature stories for The Intercept, journalists Steven Thrasher and Afeef Nessouli report on how unprecedented U.S. health budget cuts are affecting vulnerable LGBTQ+ people and communities in the U.S. and abroad, as well as other people living with HIV/AIDS.

The team gathers public health data and other research, interviews individuals, and questions government officials who hold power over the fate of life-saving programs. They also talk with those who must now find ways to provide aid. The pair documents the real-life consequences of slashing HIV treatment and other key support in certain regions in the United States. They also investigate how U.S. global aid cuts are playing out in South Africa, Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, and among trans, queer, and HIV-positive migrants in Greece who've fled oppression in their home countries and face the risks from aid cuts as well.
