In recent years, big tech companies have built hundreds of data centers in Latin America to fuel the rise of artificial intelligence and the rampant need for greater computing power. And there are already plans to set up many more of these facilities, which house thousands of computers that run nonstop, consume millions of liters of water per day, and require enormous amounts of energy. This week we are going to Chile, one of the pioneering countries in the installation of data centers in South America, where journalist Pablo Jiménez Arandia investigated and spoke with neighbors and activists to understand how these projects operate in the region and what their impacts have been at the local level.
