Latin America Education Program
The Pulitzer Center's education program in Latin America uses journalism as a bridge for interdisciplinary dialogues within learning environments, primarily at universities, and in schools and discussion spaces where people are equipped with information to become active citizens.
The Pulitzer Center's education program in Latin America uses journalism as a bridge for interdisciplinary dialogues within learning environments, primarily at universities, and in schools and discussion spaces where people are equipped with information to become active citizens. To this end, we build partnerships with universities and public schools, which promote broad access to socio-environmental discussions not only for students and teachers, but for the community as a whole. We believe that the educational space needs to be an interdisciplinary space that takes into account the different types of knowledge that exist, be it local, regional, or global. Our activities—just like journalism—always seek to include the diversity of voices that are important for debating issues that have been determined by the past and are crucial for the future. Most of our activities are aimed at audiences in regions that are directly affected by today's main socio-environmental problems.
Our key activities include:
- Interdisciplinary university courses: They build the capacity of professors, students, and researchers on climate and the environment and its intersectional sociopolitical issues.
- Amazon in the Anthropocene: This flagship program in partnership with leading universities convenes experts, academia, journalists, and Indigenous thinkers from the Amazon through dialogues, workshops, and debates.
- Webinar series: These connect students across Latin America in multidisciplinary discussions on complex issues such as the interconnection of ocean and climate, emphasizing diversity of voices.
- Environmental film festivals: Screenings of different films and documentaries, curated by topic and historical moment, that allows a deep understanding of socio-environmental themes through art and dialogues.
- Workshops and educational challenges: This portion of the work includes lesson plans and essay contests based on journalistic articles supported by the Pulitzer Center, targeting university students and schools, as well as workshops for journalism students in universities in the Amazon region.
- The Impact Seed Fund (Fundo Semear): These microgrants are awarded to researchers at Latin American universities to implement research and communication projects on issues of impactful socio-environmental relevance today. Many of the projects involve extension university programs, combining universities and primary and secondary school students as main audiences. Indigenous communities and traditional knowledge are also part of the projects selected under this funding.
