Initiative
Latin America Outreach Program
The Pulitzer Center’s Latin America Outreach Program, Aguayo Lab, is a collaborative platform that uses journalism as a bridge to promote dialogue, participation, and action on the region’s most urgent socio-environmental challenges.
Through campaigns, storytelling, and community-driven initiatives, Aguayo Lab amplifies the voices of those most affected by climate change, deforestation, ocean pollution, and the social impacts of artificial intelligence. It serves as a meeting point for journalists, community leaders, students, activists, and decision-makers committed to building transparent governance and advancing solutions that protect both people and the environment.
We believe lasting impact comes from collective action. That is why Aguayo Lab partners with schools, grassroots organizations, communities, and civil society to create spaces of learning, debate, and participation—spaces that integrate diverse forms of knowledge, from local and traditional wisdom to global scientific expertise.
What we do
Our activities are designed to bring journalism closer to people and strengthen communities’ abilities to respond to today’s most pressing challenges. We promote interdisciplinary dialogues, educational activities, and outreach initiatives that connect journalism with civic participation and environmental protection.
Key activities include:
- Community engagement: An annual letter contest, interactive discussions, and Aguayo Lab MeetUps in Latin American capitals to exchange experiences and solutions for climate action and social challenges.
- Digital campaigns: Collaborations with content creators to produce reels and other creative formats based on Pulitzer Center–supported stories, combined with training and peer-to-peer exchanges to improve quality and reach.
- Capacity building: Training sessions, workshops, and webinars on journalism, governance, and environmental issues, offering young people opportunities to engage with solutions and deepen their learning.
- Knowledge sharing: A bi-weekly newsletter with stories, resources, and opportunities, as well as direct access to talks, grants, and fellowship programs.
- Networking: Connections with Pulitzer Center journalists and experts who support members’ journalistic, academic, and civic projects.
- Public participation: Free access to festivals, public dialogues, and educational initiatives that open socio-environmental debates to students, teachers, and communities.
