Registrations for the South-to-South AI Accountability CoLab’s Peer Learning Circles are now open!

The Pulitzer Center is seeking applications from civil society, academia, or researchers operating in Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia for three-day virtual learning circles on AI accountability and governance. Tomasz Hollanek and Maya Indira Ganesh, both from the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI) at the University of Cambridge, will convene the sessions. 

The learning circles offer an opportunity to explore AI accountability through real-world examples, examine how it interacts with societies, and assess how it might fall short of the hype.

Through the Pulitzer Center’s baseline study, we recognized the need to create a multidisciplinary space for knowledge exchange where civil society, academia, researchers, and journalists collaborate to push for AI that serves the public interest. 

Course description

Each three-day workshop is designed for organizations newly or previously engaged with AI accountability or public interest technologies. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and clarify their understanding of AI concepts from real-world examples, helping participants think more expansively about approaches to AI accountability.

The course will require a dedicated time commitment: We will meet for six hours in one week, and an additional hour of recommended homework will be assigned between sessions to maximize our session time.

On day one, the learning circle will cover the basics of AI: its history, introduction to machine learning and deep learning, and the harms of AI using reporting supported by the Pulitzer Center. Our AI Spotlight Series coaches will facilitate the session. On days two and three, participants will learn how to identify AI harms using a practical framework and explore accountability pathways from bottom-up to top-down AI governance mechanisms.

The learning circles will close with an ideation clinic for AI accountability initiatives, where participants can gain feedback from fellow participants and facilitators. The Pulitzer Center will launch a micro-grants program in July 2025. These sessions aim to help participants who are interested in applying to the Center’s micro grant or other fundraising activities.

How the sessions work

We are hosting the learning circles online. To maximize your experience and support your peers, please treat it as an in-person workshop by shutting down your other tasks and fully committing to being present and engaged during session time.

We welcome civil society organizations, academics, and researchers from Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia to apply. The application will be open in July 2025.
