The latest Pulitzer Center visit to Campus Consortium partner Northwestern University in Qatar features grantee journalists Marcia Biggs, Iona Craig, and Jeffrey Stern. Also joining the Pulitzer Center-supported journalists on the three-day visit, February 16 to February 18, 2020, is Pulitzer Center senior editor Tom Hundley.
The community event on Sunday, February 16, focuses on war and humanitarian crises in Yemen. Each of the three visiting journalists have reported from Yemen previously with Pulitzer Center support:
- For her project, "Inside Yemen," Biggs reported for PBS NewsHour in 2018 as the conflict in Yemen entered its fourth year. Biggs is a freelance journalist and has reported for ABC News, Fox News Channel, Al Jazeera English, and CNN. Her expertise is in covering conflict and humanitarian crises.
- For her project, "Yemen: Two Years of War," Craig reported for multiple outlets, including the BBC and The Intercept, in 2017 on the impact of Yemen's civil war after two years of conflict. Craig is a freelance journalist who contributes to media outlets worldwide. She specializes in both print and broadcast.
- For his project, "Judgment Day," Stern reported for The New York Times and Democracy Now in 2018 on a Yemeni village in the aftermath of a deadly air strike. Stern is a freelance writer who has also reported from Afghanistan and Kashmir. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Republic, Foreign Policy, and Slate, among other outlets.
The visit also includes presentations to NU-Q classes by the visiting journalists. Classes visited will include media and society, news gathering and assessment, and audience insight. The visit will end with an information session led by Hundley on the Pulitzer Center Campus Consortium reporting fellowship program.
