Pulitzer Center grantees and Senior Strategist Steve Sapienza will participate in panel discussions on October 22 and 24, respectively, at the annual ScienceWriters meeting in Memphis, Tennessee. Registration is closed. Video from the events will be available after October 25.

On October 22, grantees Jon Cohen and Jane Qiu will speak with educators, experts, and peer science journalists about the coverage of the origin of COVID-19. Qiu reported on the Wuhan wet market and virology lab as part of the project COVID-19 in China: the Origins, the Response, and the Way Forward, published in National Geographic and MIT Technology Review. Cohen, a staff reporter for Science magazine, documented the development of vaccines and inequities as part of the project The Science of COVID-19.

On October 24, Sapienza and Catherine Matacic of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) will speak with science journalists about the joint HHMI-Pulitzer Center initiative Science Misinformation: Journalism in the Age of Truth Decay, which launched in late October.

The annual ScienceWriters meeting brings together journalists, students, and members of the National Association of Science Writers and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. It is a mix of professional development workshops, briefings on the latest scientific research, extensive networking opportunities, and field trips.

This year’s meeting is hosted by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Virtual programming begins October 12. In-person programming begins October 21 and ends on October 25.
