Pulitzer Center Grantees To Discuss Conflict, Geopolitics in the Horn of Africa at Spelman College

Pulitzer Center grantee and author of The Good Death: An Exploration of Dying in America, Ann Neumann, and Pulitzer Center grantee and cofounder of InfoNile, Fredrick Mugira, will visit Spelman College on October 24, 2024. They will present at the Arts and Entertainment Summit and meet with students.

Neumann reported from Egypt and Ethiopia with Pulitzer Center support. Her project Who Owns the Nile? Ethiopia's War Against Itself examines the country’s geopolitical ambitions, which may be jeopardized by internal conflict between the minority Tigrayan population and president Abiy Ahmed’s government. Neumann published “Hydropower” in The Baffler and “Falling Like Leaves: The War in Ethiopia and Its Crimes Against Civilians” in Harper’s Magazine. Neumann’s work has also appeared in The Guardian and The New York Times.

Mugira reported from the 11 African countries in the Congo Basin about how foreign governments and agribusiness strain water supply, displace residents, and heighten international tensions in Sucked Dry: Land Grabs and Water Access in the Nile River Basin. He partnered with Code for Africa and InfoNile to publish interactive maps and data visualizations. Mugira cofounded InfoNile and is head of Africa Water Journalists. He has won numerous awards.
