Join Puiltzer Center Education and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a professional development opporunity that will introduce methods for using global news stories and journalism skills to deepen students' engagement with their curricula, while also increasing their critical thinking and communications skills. The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) Summer Institute will feature presentations by three award-winning journalists who are currently covering pressing issues facing communities in Latin America. Monday, June 29
9:30-11am: Extra-continental migration through Latin America: Presentation and q&a with journalist Nadja Drost
11:00-11:15 am: Break 
11:15am-12:15pm: Interactive workshop "Connecting students to under-reported global issues: Reading, Reflection, Writing and Action" 
12:15-12:30: Break
12:30-1:45 pm: How Indigenous Youth Defend the Amazon: Presentation and Q&A with visual journalist Pablo Albarenga
1:45-2:00 pm: Reflection and resource sharing
2:00-2:30: Optional networking zoom meeting (link will be provided during the session)

Tuesday, June 30
9:30-11:00 am: Water Access and the impacts of COVID-19 in Peru: Presentation and q&a with photojournalist Musuk Nolte
11:00-11:15 am: Break
11:15am-12:00pm: Interactive workshop, "A Journalist's Toolbox: Reporting Skills to tell under-reported stories that matter to you" 
12:00-12:30 pm: Optional networking zoom meeting (link will be provided during the session)

Participants will leave with the tools to incorporate new content into their classes, as well as connections to journalists working on pressing global issues. The session will also utilize breakout rooms to provide opportunities for participants to brainstorm, collaborate and network.
