SECTIONS

On Thursday, April 21, 2022, at 5:30pm CDT, please join the Chicago Council on Global Affairs for an event addressing incarceration and ways to apply equitable styles of social policy. Grantee Natalie Moore, whose project explores Finland’s open prison system and racial discrimination, will share insights from her reporting and how these rehabilitative models may be applied to criminal justice reform in Chicago and the United States.

While Chicago leads the country in prison abolition reforms, it looks to other models of policymaking for creative social solutions. In a third of prisons in Finland, prisoners are able to remain integrated in their communities through jobs and university classes while being electronically monitored and receiving rehabilitative services.

“This country is taking care of a very stressful thing so you can be more independent,” Moore said during an interview with WBEZ. “Finland was a poor country that didn’t have a lot of high measures in a lot of areas, and there was a collective sense that things needed to change.”

This event will be available to the public via Zoom and YouTube. You can register here.
