Tracking Illegal Airstrips in the Amazon

“Where there's gold, there's an airstrip.”

Join us for a Twitter Spaces conversation about the recently published investigative project, Airstrips of Destruction. Learn more about the series of reports by the Rainforest Investigations Network Fellows Hyury Potter and Manuela Andreoni on clandestine aviation runways in the Amazon.

For the past year, a team of data scientists and journalists from The Intercept Brasil and The New York Times investigated the extent of a network of illegal and unsanctioned airstrips in Brazil’s Amazon. They identified over 1,000 unregistered airstrips as part of a scheme to support illegal mining operations within Indigenous territories and protected areas.

To make this investigation, thousands of high-resolution satellite images were analyzed, and an in-depth field investigation shows who is behind this clandestine network.

Manuela Andreoni will talk about her work in the state of Roraima in Brazil, where she met with Yanomami communities affected by illegal mining. Her front-page story included a multimedia presentation by The New York Times graphics team.

Hyury Potter will show how he initially conceived the idea of investigating the network of clandestine tracks and how this opened several paths for further investigation into the companies and people connected to this illegal infrastructure that is contributing to rainforest destruction and threatening the livelihoods of local Indigenous communities.

This event will take place in Portuguese and be made available in English at a later date.
