Green Voice Matters seeks to capture the lived experiences of coastal communities and present them to university students and broader audiences through Pulitzer Center-supported stories. The initiative aims to empower future scientists with the skills to produce impactful narratives that highlight environmental challenges, including challenges in Indonesia waters and the adverse effects of nickel mining. This collaboration not only bridges the gap between academia and public discourse, but also fosters a community of practice dedicated to environmental advocacy. Through workshops, panel discussions, and multimedia exhibitions, Green Voice Matters aspires to create a platform where the critical issues of climate change and industrial impacts can be explored and addressed comprehensively and engagingly.
This workshop consists of two main sections: a morning section as an introduction and the plenary for the activity, followed by a more interactive deep dive on environmental journalism, environmental degradation, and climate change through group activities in the afternoon, divided into three main areas: 1) ocean, 2) forest, and 3) nickel mining.
The event will have four main outputs:
- Workshop Materials for Stories Deep Dive and Sharing Session: These materials will reflect the current environmental degradation in Indonesia's ocean, forests, and nickel mining areas as captured by journalists to provide a comprehensive understanding for all participants. Award-winning journalists and university scholars will present their findings during the plenary session, setting the stage for the participants before they delve into interactive group activities.
- Case Studies and Role-Playing Materials (Group Discussion): Designed to prompt awareness and curiosity, these materials will engage participants in understanding environmental issues through realistic scenarios and active participation.
- Group Creative Activities and Presentations: Participants will engage in group activities that foster creativity and collaboration, culminating in presentations that showcase their insights and proposed solutions.
- Student Assignments: After the workshop, students will create media op-eds on assigned topics. These can take the form of short op-eds in media outlets, with narratives developed from stories shared by journalists, workshop discussions, and activities.
