American University, a Campus Consortium partner, brings together Pulitzer Center journalist grantee Jason Motlagh and student fellow Kara Andrade to talk about international freelance reporting. Independent journalist Trey Yingst, arrested during protests in Ferguson, MO, also participates during the session on Sunday, April 10, 2016.
With a changing landscape for journalism, including fewer reporting bureaus around the world, freelancers are filling a void especially in international reporting. Motlagh, Andrade and Yingst will speak about the challenges they have faced as freelance journalists and the measures they have taken to overcome those challenges. Bill Gentile, journalist in residence at American University, moderates the discussion.
Motlagh is an award-winning journalist, photographer and filmmaker whose work has appeared in many publications, including VQR, The Washington Post, National Geographic and Economist. Formerly TIME magazine's Kabul correspondent, he has reported from more than 40 countries spanning West Africa to Southeast Asia.. Among the honors he has received are the Overseas Press Club's Madeline Dane Ross award for best international reporting on the human condition, and the Daniel Pearl Award for best reporting on South Asia.
Andrade is a Ph.D. student at American University's School of Communication and recipient of one of the Pulitzer Center's 2015 Campus Consortium reporting fellowships. She focuses on Latin America, media, technology and society, and has more than 10 years experience with media organizations.
This event, which includes a reception, is free and open to the public.
