Journalist Amy Maxmen traveled to Sierra Leone during the peak of the country's Ebola outbreak.

She wanted to investigate techniques health workers used to research in a disaster setting and the methods they used to determine transmission. But reporting on the disease led to an unexpected story: that of unpaid health workers on the front lines.
