Examining the Economics and Human Toll of Declining Industry

Elementary Warm-up: Brainstorming basic information necessary to talk about the dairy industry. 

Middle and High School Warm-up: Analyzing the dairy auctioneers perspective on how they see the dairy industry struggling.

Introducing the Reporting: Playing the Dairyland in Distress game, then reading "Struggling to Tread Water" and "Dairy Farmers Are in Crisis," guided by discussion questions.

Discussion/Activity: Debating which solution from "Wisconsin Dairy Farmers Seek Higher Milk Prices" should be implemented in Wisconsin to accomodate for the overproduction for milk.

Extension Activites:

1. Historical Research: Examining regional industry and how it relates to the larger community.

2. Economic Research: Discussing NAFTA to create a new or adapted version of this trade agreement. 

3. Debate: Debating on the role of the federal government to stabilize or not to stabilize the dairy industry. 

4. Storytelling: Reflecting on the structural differences within news stories through different perspectives.
