TIME Receives Emmy Nod for Pulitzer-Supported ‘Salvadoran Women and Suicide’ Piece

TIME has earned a nomination for the 2020 News & Documentary Emmy Awards in the Outstanding New Approaches: Current News category for "In El Salvador, Violence Is Driving Girls to Kill Themselves," a Pulitzer Center-supported story produced in partnership with Univision News Digital.

With text by grantee Patricia Clarembaux and video and photography by grantee Almudena Toral, the multimedia article examines the violence facing women in El Salvador, a country that prohibits abortion in all cases and has the highest rate of femicides in the world. Over the past two decades, "dozens of young people have been sentenced to prison for spontaneous miscarriage and obstetric emergencies," according to the story. The piece marks TIME's sixth Emmy Awards nomination in the past four years.

Facilitated by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), the 41st Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards honors reporting content that premiered in the calendar-year 2019. Over 2,000 submissions were judged by group of 875 professionals from across the television and digital news and documentary industry. The awards will be livestreamed in two individual ceremonies on September 21 and September 22, 2020.
