Teaching Truth: Cultivating Curiosity and Compassion With 'The 1619 Project'

Event Date:

June 10, 2023 | 12:00 PM TO 1:00 PM

The Pulitzer Center invites educators to join us on Saturday, June 10 from 12:00-1:00pm EDT for “Teaching Truth: Cultivating curiosity and compassion with The 1619 Project,” a workshop we are leading as part of the Zinn Education Project’s Teach Truth Day of Action. The event is free, but registration is required.

The 1619 Project launched in August 2019 with a special issue of The New York Times Magazine that included essays and creative works by journalists, historians, and artists. The project illuminates the legacy of slavery in the contemporary United States, and highlights the contributions of Black Americans to every aspect of society. In this 60-minute workshop for educators, we’ll model the resources and strategies educators in The 1619 Project Education Network have used to explore the central themes and ideas in the Project with their students. The workshop centers educators as learners as participants will deep dive into a primary source, analytical essay, or creative work from The 1619 Project, while using tools and strategies developed by Pulitzer Center staff and our growing community of educators and students across the country who are teaching 1619. Participants will then connect to brainstorm how the resources and themes from the project can support their curricula and goals for their students.

The Pulitzer Center’s 1619 Project Education Network is proud to be a cosponsor of this day that aims to empower and celebrate the work of educators who pledge to #TeachTruth.
