Businesses are losing money because of frequent flooding.

An English summary of this report is below. The original report, published in bahasa Indonesia in Kontan, follows.

Tri Wiguna, a worker at a manufacturing plant in North Jakarta, just shook his head when he was asked about the fate of the union members he leads. The factory where Tri works is only 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the shoreline and, because of climate change-induced flooding, has been closed since July 2024. Tri and hundreds of workers were laid off.

“The company also lost money, the factory machinery stopped because (the company was) worried about electrocuting workers,” said Tri.

Tri's story is just one of many stories of laborers along Java's north coast region, which is often flooded due to climate impacts. Thousands of Indonesian workers were laid off during January-October 2024.
