A fishpond wall. Image by Grace Cajski. United States, 2022.

A ray’s fin
and a puffer’s gaze;
two terns beat their wings while
fern fronds pivot towards the clouds.

A thrown pebble
returns to shore
one day.

Wouldn’t you like to be there?

A woman cuts down mangroves
and a man catches fingerlings—

Fisherfolk watch nearby:
Maybe this
is the tide that
carries the pebble to its shore
and all that was wrong
resolves.

Look up:
I see that a sun will soon
rise
and its pink dawn will light
this long shoreline
where your hope
bore on.
