Without enough access to testing and alienated from urban centers, Indigenous groups in Bolivia have had to create their own medicinal syrups and ointments to strengthen their immune systems and to combat COVID-19 symptoms. In the process, some have even generated some income to keep themselves afloat. In neighboring countries, the situation tends to be similar or even more critical. In Peru, one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic in Latin America, the Indigenous people rely on traditional medicine and are the last to receive public health attention; meanwhile in Paraguay, COVID-19 has worsened the already fragile state they live in due to social violence and climate contingencies.
