Scotland's population of nearly 5.3 million represents a small chunk of the United Kingdom's 63 million citizens. However, as they threaten secession, Scotland's small population has captured the attention of everyone across Britain.

Why has this become an issue after centuries of peaceful coexistence? Many Scots are asking the same question. A referendum is set for September 18, 2014.
