Regardless of race, ethnicity or religion, congenital heart defects are one of the leading causes of death in children.

The World Health Organization has noted that when infectious diseases are omitted, congenital heart disease accounts for more lives lost in the first year of life than any other illness. Countries in the developing world are burdened with finding a solution to this silent killer.

William Novick Cardiac Alliance, a U.S. non-profit organization, works with highly trained medical teams to help build sustainable pediatric cardiac programs worldwide. In August 2015, they made their first trip to Tehran, Iran.

In this video, Farzana Shah, a pediatric ICU nurse and Pulitzer Center student fellow, who accompanied the group as a member of the international medical team, shares her experience in Tehran.
