Zimbabwe’s Fisheries in a Double Bind

Country:

Author:

This project delves into the unintended consequences of Zimbabwe's growing informal sector, where fisheries have attracted the unemployed, pushing rural communities further into poverty.

Communities along the mighty Zambezi River find themselves competing with "outsiders" from across the country who are hoarding fish for resale, resulting in dwindling fish stocks. Zimbabwe shares the Zambezi with neighboring Zambia, and authorities are battling to enforce fishing quotas, a scenario that has only worsened the economic circumstances of riparian communities.
