In December 2024, war artist-reporter George Butler returned to Syria for the first time in 12 years. There, he captured the stories of people who experienced decades of oppression and who now hold cautious hope for a "free Syria" under a new government.
Through interviews, dramatic drawings, and portraits of everyday Syrians, Butler tells the stories of people who survived the chemical strikes in Douma, those imprisoned at Sednaya, and those who lived underground during Russian bombardment in East Ghouta and Homs. Reporting will be in print, online, and in multimedia.
"Human testimony meets cultural significance in the hope for a better future," Butler said. "Now is the time to tell these stories, we have a window of peace that could be all too fragile."
Butler is the co-founder of Action Syria, which has raised more than $12 million for humanitarian work.
