As the full scale invasion of Ukraine drags into its third year, international attention and aid is waning, Russian forces are encroaching, and the death toll of Ukrainian soldiers is now over 31,000. Ukrainian teenagers are now forced to come of age amid a protracted war of uncertain outcome. Recruitment campaigns are ramping up, a mobilization bill just lowered the draft age to 25, and many are eager to fight to defend their home and avenge loved ones. Those who don’t wish to fight, face fleeing their home, or trying to carve out a future in wartime.
As in depth coverage of the conflict that once monopolized headlines fades, despite urgent geopolitical implications, this project will create a photo essay and article looking at Highschool Seniors in Kyiv, and the daily life of teens and their families as they study, volunteer, party, and many train for future military roles which could begin within months. The project will create an intimate record of the personal affects and new "normal" of the war on a generation who’s entire life has been defined by Maidan Revolution and the events since.
