Between 2005 and 2006, Dansa Agro Allied, a subsidiary of the Dangote Group, acquired 75,000 hectares of land in Oban, Cross River State, to set up a pineapple farm and processing plant.
While the land falls within the boundaries of Cross River National Park, one of Nigeria's most forested and biodiversity-rich areas, the government of Cross River State granted a concession to the company.
Beyond its original plan of planting and processing pineapples, Dansa has resorted to large-scale logging deep within the national park.
This report seeks to uncover the illegal logging activity and how this practice is spurring deforestation, enabling mechanisms as well as the impact on Nigeria's biodiversity and climate sustainability plans.
