Challenges for Peruvian Migrants in Argentina

In the bustling streets of Buenos Aires, amid a blend of cultures and languages, Peruvian migrants and advocates navigate the city’s complex society and government. Their stories reveal not just personal trials but also broader societal issues faced by other South American migrants in Argentina.
The Peruvian migrant population in Argentina has seen a substantial increase from just over 150,000 in 2010 to 430,000 in 2020, with more than 80% residing in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. A disturbing incident in 2020 emphasizes the discrimination and reason for heightened fears in this community: The murder of a Peruvian migrant went without investigation and the family was not compensated because he worked in the informal sector.
The situation becomes even more complicated with the changes Argentine President Javier Milei has made to labor. In the future, he says, he wants to reduce foreigners' access to education and health.
This project traces the challenges and discrimination that Peruvians have faced, possible challenges with the presidential administration, and Peruvians' resilience in confronting obstacles.
