The oceans are our biggest carbon sink, absorbing a third of human emissions—and a growing number of scientists, politicians, and entrepreneurs think they could absorb more. This project will investigate the advantages and risks of techniques like iron fertilization, growing and sinking seaweed, and planting mangroves and seagrass to sell carbon credits. Oceans may be able to draw down billions of tons of additional CO2 from the atmosphere. But if more marine ecosystems are destroyed in the process, it could release more carbon—and potentially encourage greenwashing and delay.
