Thousands took to the internet to express immediate interest when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited foreigners to take up arms for Ukraine by joining the newly-formed International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine.
In an act of voluntary military solidarity that conjures something like 2022’s version of the Spanish Civil War's international brigade— the contemporary Lincoln Battalion—this project traces several fighter groups from various countries, from those whose origins are with the extremist militias in America, to those who defected from President Alexander Lukashenko's army in Belarus, tracking their disparate motivations and intentions as they make their way to the front. The project follows them from America to Poland and then across the border into different legions in the second week of the war.
