It is now 30 years since the Rwandan genocide, when hundreds of thousands of Tutsis were killed by Hutu militias. Since then, much has been invested in ‘truth and reconciliation’ initiatives within Rwanda. But the region has still not found peace.

Brutal conflict has continued to play out in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, where a million civilians have been displaced by the rebel group M23, the latest generation of Rwandan military intervention in East Congo.

This work traces this contemporary history of upheaval, and tells the story of the civilians and soldiers at the heart of this crisis.
