Syeda Rizwana Hasan

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, chief executive of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), is focused on promoting environmental justice.
As an environmental lawyer and activist, Rizwana has led numerous successful legal and social campaigns protecting locals' traditional livelihoods and agricultural and forest rights, and fighting against illegal filling up of wetlands by for-profit entities, environmental aggressions, pollution, among other issues.
Rizwana, named as one of the 40 Environmental Heroes of the World by TIME magazine, has also received the Goldman Environmental Prize (2009), the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2012), the Tang Prize (2020), and the International Women of Courage Award (2022).
