Shane Burke
2021 POST-GRAD REPORTING FELLOW
Shane Burke is a data journalist focused on what’s next in technology, science, policy and culture. He combines data analysis and narrative reporting to shed light on pressing issues and trends. Since 2022, Burke has been a visual and data journalist at technology publication The Information, creating graphics, data projects and art on topics spanning the tech industry, in addition to analyzing and interpreting data for coverage.
Raised in New York, Burke studied government at Dartmouth College and data journalism at Columbia University. He has reported for The Information, The Nation and The Salt Lake Tribune. Prior to working in journalism, Burke worked in data analysis as a manager at a market research firm.
In 2022, with the help of the Pulitzer Center, Burke explored how a ‘revolution’ of new forms of HIV prevention medicine could impact the HIV epidemic for young women in South Africa, where over seven million people live with HIV. This work culminated in a feature in The Nation, and led to freelance coverage of HIV/AIDS science for POZ.com, including live coverage of the 2022 International AIDS Conference in Montreal.
