Rukaia Alabadi

2026 OCEAN REPORTING FELLOW (MIDDLE EAST)

Rukaia Alabadi is an independent investigative journalist specializing in environmental reporting in conflict and post-conflict settings. Her work focuses on the intersections of war, climate change, and natural resource exploitation, with an emphasis on environmental justice and impacts on vulnerable communities in Syria and the wider region.

She has produced in-depth investigations on climate-driven displacement, loss of agricultural land, groundwater depletion, water scarcity and pollution, and the effects of rising temperatures on women in conflict zones. She has also reported on renewable energy projects and corruption, and contributed to open-source investigations, including coverage of floods in Sudan, using OSINT and satellite imagery.

Her work has been recognized with regional and international honors, including the Samir Kassir Award for Freedom of the Press 2022, and she has been shortlisted for the Fetisov Journalism Awards 2021. She was also nominated for the Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa Climate and Gender Justice Award 2025, and is a member of the seventh cohort of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network in 2025.
