Jim Urquhart
GRANTEE
Jim Urquhart, a 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner, has covered extremism, armed violence, and the destabilization of the United States. He has spent time with violent hate groups, armed militias, and armed leftist groups.
A freelancer since 2010, he works with a number of leading news organizations, editors, and reporters. Urquhart was a 2022 Nieman journalism fellow at Harvard University, where he continued his studies on race and power, domestic extremism, white nationalism, and conflicts around the world.
Prior to freelancing, he worked for 10 years as an editor, photojournalist, and reporter at several daily newspapers in the United States. He's also a consultant for several news organizations, where he mentors others to improve their on-the-ground reporting, sourcing, and security considerations while reporting on extremist movements.
In addition to being a photojournalist, he is an on-site safety adviser and hostile-environment and first aid training instructor working around the world to prepare journalists for violent and austere environments.
