Heriberto Araújo

INTERNATIONAL RJF GRANTEE

Heriberto Araújo is a journalist, writer and speaker. He reports on the environment, human rights and Latin America. His articles on Brazil and the Amazon have been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian and El País.

He is currently writing his first independently authored book, a nonfiction book about the Amazon rain forest which is the result of two years of in-depth research that brought the author across seven Brazilian states, covering about 800,000 square kilometers of rainforest in a hunt for court files, historical archives, and over 150 insider sources.

Previously, he has co-written three books on China: China's Silent Army (2013), which was published in ten languages including editions in the US (Crown), UK (Allen Lane), France (Flammarion), Germany (Hanser), and Spain (Critica); The Unbeatable Rival, which was published in Germany (Hanser), Spain (Critica), and Italy (Feltrinelli); and The Invisible Empire (Spain). On publication, Araújo spoke at the BBC, the London School of Economics, and Oxford University, among others.

His books have been reviewed by The New York Review of Books, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Financial Times, The Guardian and Literary Review. Previously, he spent seven years as China correspondent (2007-2014) for the news media agencies AFP and Notimex. He has also published articles about the rise of China and its global implications in The New York Times, The Times of London and The Telegraph. Born in Barcelona, the author is fluent in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.
