Gaiutra Bahadur

Gaiutra Bahadur is an award-winning journalist who writes frequently about migration, literature and gender. Her essays, book reviews and reportage have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, Ms. Magazine, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Washington Post, History Today and Dissent Magazine, among other publications. She is the author of "Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture" (The University of Chicago Press, 2013), a narrative history of indentured plantation workers which was shortlisted for the 2014 Orwell Prize, the British prize for artful political writing.
Gaiutra was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in the 2007-2008 academic year. Before that, she worked as a daily newspaper staff writer for a decade, covering immigration, the war in Iraq, the Texas Legislature, courts and demographics for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Austin American-Statesman. She was born in Guyana and emigrated to the United States at the age of six.
