Elizabeth Alberts

2024 OCEAN REPORTING FELLOW (EUROPE)

Elizabeth Claire Alberts is a senior staff writer on the ocean reporting team of the award-winning environmental science and conservation news outlet Mongabay. She has been covering deep-sea mining for Mongabay, and she also reports on a range of other ocean-related topics, including fisheries, rising sea temperatures, and coral reef health.

Prior to joining Mongabay, Alberts was a staff writer for The Dodo (now part of Vox Media).

Her reporting has been cited and republished by numerous outlets, including The New York Times, Nature, Smithsonian, and China Dialogue. Her journalism has also appeared in such outlets as The Guardian, Earth Island Journal, Sierra, and the journal Alternatives

Alberts has a doctorate in creative writing from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, and she also spent nine years teaching creative writing at Macquarie and supervising students’ major writing projects.

As much as possible, Alberts tries to be near, in, or on the ocean. She is a keen beachcomber, an avid scuba diver, and a dreamer of sailing around the world.
