Dhrumil Mehta

Dhrumil Mehta is a data journalist and educator who teaches at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and serves as deputy director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.
Before joining Columbia, Mehta worked as a database journalist at FiveThirtyEight, where he built and maintained core data infrastructure, developed interactive tools, and contributed data-driven reporting on public opinion, elections, and media.
His work focuses on the use of data, computation, and analytical methods to support journalistic accountability, transparency, and innovation. Mehta also teaches courses that bridge journalism, programming, and data analysis, and is a visiting associate professor of public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Mehta holds a master’s degree in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence and natural language processing, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, both from Northwestern University.
