Collins Mtika

Collins Mtika is an award-winning Malawian investigative journalist and media professional with more than 15 years of experience covering governance, public accountability, environmental issues, poverty, and social policy. He is a co-founder of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in Malawi (CIJM), an independent platform dedicated to strengthening investigative journalism and public-interest reporting.

Mtika previously served as bureau chief for Malawi’s Northern Province at Times Media Group, the country’s largest newspaper publisher, formerly known as Blantyre Newspapers Limited. The group publishes The Daily Times, Sunday Times, and Malawi News and previously published the now-defunct The Weekend Times. He has also worked as chief reporter at the triweekly The Guardian and as executive editor of Northern Life Magazine.

His international and regional reporting experience includes serving as a correspondent for Inter Press Service (IPS Africa) and contributing articles and investigative reports to South Africa’s Mail & Guardian and Africa Independent, as well as Africa in Fact Magazine and The Star. He also headed the investigations desk at NyasaTimes.com, one of Malawi’s leading online publications.

Known for his rigorous research, public-interest focus, and hard-hitting investigative reporting, Mtika has produced journalism examining abuse of power, institutional failures, corruption, environmental governance, and the impact of public policy on vulnerable communities. Through his reporting and work with CIJM, he continues to promote accountability, transparency, and stronger journalism in Malawi and across the region.
