Cláudia Marques Santos

With a degree in communication sciences and a master's in contemporary culture and new technologies from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Cláudia Marques Santos is a freelance journalist based in Lisbon, with work published in Visão, Público, Observador, Expresso, Diário de Notícias, LER and Setenta e Quatro.
She is currently coordinator of Innocence Project, an investigative journalism initiative that aims to restore freedom for the innocent. The initiative earned her a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. She was also awarded a cultural journalism grant by Fundación Gabriel García Marquez twice, in 2018 and 2020.
She recently formed, with eight other members, Portugal’s first journalists’ consortium. Its first investigation was about hate speech perpetrated online by Portuguese police forces. Her article was published last November in Expresso newspaper.
She teaches journalism and semiotics at Lusófona University and is working on a personal project titled "If You Walk the Galaxies," in which she interviews Portuguese-speaking artists.
