Camille Rodríguez Montilla
GRANTEE
Camille Rodríguez Montilla is a journalist and filmmaker based in Caracas, Venezuela. Following her communication studies in France, she returned to Venezuela and has worked as a video journalist and producer.
Her work focuses on telling stories close to her and portraying her country beyond the crisis it's undergoing, showing what is left of what she loves about Venezuela: its people and mixed culture.
In 2021, the National Geographic Society selected her as a grantee to produce The Crisis of Illusion, her first short documentary about depression and the rise of suicide rates during the pandemic in Venezuela.
Following her diagnosis of severe depression aggravated by the pandemic, she decided to portray the struggle of locals to address mental health, the effects of the lack of public health in the country, and the consequences of social preconceptions. Her work received a special mention on Picture of The Year (POY) in 2023.
The Associated Press has published her work as a visual storyteller and writer, as well as Bloomberg, Agence France-Presse, the Miami Herald, Al Jazeera, and others.
