AI Accountability Network at Mozilla Festival

The Pulitzer Center is bringing two cohorts of AI Accountability Fellows and six South-to-South civil society micrograntees to Mozilla Festival in Barcelona.

On October 26, journalists from the fourth and fifth cohorts of the AI Accountability Fellowship will gather to share reporting methodologies, how to best engage their communities with their reporting, and discuss ways to collaborate.

At a pre-conference workshop on October 27, Pulitzer Center participants will workshop questions around building alliances for accountable AI with civil society partners going to the festival. This will be the largest in-person gathering to date for the AI Accountability Network, which was launched in 2022 to support journalists working to cover the money, power, and ideologies behind AI technologies.

In addition to the pre-conference workshops, the Pulitzer Center will host a panel during the Festival:

"Building Partnerships To Investigate and Resist Data Centers’ Thirsty Expansion" (10:00am-11:00am CET in the D4 Room)

All over the world, Big Tech companies are finding new ways to build data centers, often without nearby residents knowing anything about it before it’s too late. In this session, we’ll hear from journalists from places such as Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, and Mexico who have documented the lobbying, secrecy and societal and environmental impact of data centers in their areas and organizers who have used that information to resist expansion via government advocacy, in the courts, and through collective action. This panel will feature Fellows Miguel Dobrich (Amenaza Roboto), Laís Martins (Intercept Brasil), and Pablo Jiménez Arandia (freelance) and civil society grantee and lawyer Ana Gaitán from R3D (Red en Defensa de los Derechos Digitales).
